How to Select a Polyurethane System for a Sandwich Panel Project

When selecting a polyurethane system, the product name is only a starting point. For sandwich panel manufacturers, a more useful approach is to bring the panel application, production method, equipment conditions and acceptance requirements together in one technical brief before arranging sample evaluation. This helps suppliers understand the project more accurately and allows purchasing and production teams to compare different options.
Start with the panel application and production method
Rigid polyurethane foam can be used in metal-faced sandwich panels for applications such as building envelopes and cold storage. Production may use a continuous double-belt line or a discontinuous press process. Each project should specify its end use and production method rather than relying on labels such as “cold-room system” or “panel system” as a complete inquiry specification. [1]
An inquiry can include the panel thickness range, facing material, production line type and target output, together with the raw-material system currently in use. For an existing line, describe the issues you want to improve, such as filling behavior, demolding cycle or batch consistency. Defining the problem is more useful for technical discussions than simply requesting a different grade.
Record material requirements alongside validation conditions
When comparing technical information, check the property name, unit, test method and sample conditions together. Density alone, or a single typical value, does not provide a complete basis for selection. Target density, insulation requirements, dimensional requirements and compatibility with the facing materials should be submitted as a set of requirements. Both parties can then agree on the validation work needed.
Purchasing teams can also separate information into two groups: product catalogs and technical data sheets used for initial screening, and inspection or supporting documents for a specific product, batch or project. Typical catalog information can help narrow the options. Actual supply specifications, test conditions and acceptance procedures should be agreed in writing during the sampling and commercial confirmation stages.
Use traceable sample records to guide evaluation
Before a trial, agree on the raw-material batches, mixing ratio, material temperatures, equipment settings and forming conditions to be recorded, and define sample identification and evaluation procedures. After the trial, report observations alongside their corresponding conditions. This reduces situations in which sample results differ but the reasons cannot be identified.
When comparing several options, record processing behavior and finished-product test results under comparable conditions agreed by both parties. If equipment, facing materials or process conditions change, update the records and discuss whether the approach needs to be adjusted. A successful sample trial should still be followed by the agreed scale-up validation and supply confirmation.
Help an inquiry become a productive technical discussion
The MENGWEI product catalog includes PU systems for sandwich panel applications and distinguishes the needs of continuous and discontinuous production. [2] To begin a project discussion, prepare a short brief covering panel use and specifications, equipment and production method, the properties of interest, current issues, the planned sampling schedule and documentation requirements for the target market.
If the project involves specified standards, testing or certification, provide the specific requirements so both parties can confirm the applicable scope and required documents. Clear technical requirements help make product information exchange and sample evaluation more focused.
