Five Things to Clarify Before Starting a Polyurea Protection Project

At the start of a project, saying that polyurea material is required does not yet define the full need. A new water tank, a storage-tank lining and a parking-deck protection project may involve different contact media, application conditions and acceptance objectives. Purchasing, technical and application teams can first compile the following information together to reduce repeated requests for missing details.
1. Describe the service environment and contact conditions
State the purpose of the project, whether it is indoors or outdoors, and whether immersion, abrasion, vehicle traffic or sunlight is involved. Where chemical media are present, provide their names, concentrations, temperatures and contact conditions, distinguishing continuous immersion from intermittent contact. For a water tank, also describe the stored medium and applicable requirements.
Good chemical resistance is not a substitute for checking suitability for a specific application. Ask the supplier for information relevant to the actual medium and operating conditions, then agree with the project parties on any further validation needed.
2. Record substrate condition and preparation
For concrete, record existing coatings, oil contamination, cracks, laitance and damp areas, and provide site photographs. AMPP's public technical guidance includes contamination, substrate integrity, defects and potential moisture among the checks before coating. The preparation method should be selected for the actual condition. AMPP guidance
The enquiry should therefore state the substrate type, preparation already carried out and areas requiring repair. Confirm steel and concrete preparation requirements separately, and specify preparation and acceptance conditions in the applicable project documents.
3. Check spray equipment and site conditions
Provide the equipment type, metering method, heating capability and available records of site environmental conditions. As an example of how to read technical documentation, Sika's public polyurea data sheet lists mixing ratio, material temperature, air humidity, dew point and curing conditions separately, and calls for the relevant application-method documents to be checked. These fields indicate that a mixing ratio should specify whether it is by volume or by mass, and temperatures should distinguish material, air and substrate. Another brand's parameters are only examples for reading documentation. Actual settings must follow the applicable technical documents for the product to be used.
4. Define the complete system and schedule
Where a primer, repair material or topcoat is involved, list its name, position in the system and technical documentation, and ask the relevant parties to confirm compatibility within the system. Discuss the planned film thickness, estimated consumption, application area and programme in advance, rather than comparing solutions solely by the main material's unit price.
Scheduling should distinguish surface drying, recoating and final curing. The manufacturer document cited above gives separate recoating waiting times and final curing times, and notes that actual curing is affected by environmental conditions. Sika manufacturer documentation Confirm the conditions for returning the project to service separately.
5. Agree sample records and acceptance criteria
Before preparing samples, list the properties to be assessed, test methods and acceptance criteria. Record the material batch, substrate preparation, equipment settings, application environment and specimen condition. Keep sample photographs and test records linked so differences can be reviewed.
Before supply, ask for the technical data sheet (TDS) and applicable safety data sheet (SDS) for the proposed product. The manufacturer document also notes that laboratory technical data and site measurements may differ.
