From MS Resin to Finished Sealant: How to Read Technical Data

The same terms, such as viscosity, curing or bonding, may refer to different things in different documents. Raw-material buyers need to know whether a resin can be incorporated into an existing formulation, while applicators need to know whether the finished sealant meets site requirements. Comparing two data tables directly can overlook the conditions behind their values.

1. Identify whether the document describes a raw material or a finished product

Kaneka's public documentation positions MS Polymer as a base resin for manufacturing sealants, adhesives and coatings. Kaneka product information The first step is therefore to check whether a document refers to a base resin, a reference formulation or a ready-to-apply finished product.

When purchasing raw materials, list the resin grade, document version and test conditions separately. When evaluating a finished product, compile the application and service properties for the relevant formulation or batch. A value in a raw-material table should not simply be transferred to a finished-product acceptance table.

Moisture management also needs its own checks. Kaneka's technical brochure notes that inorganic fillers in a formulation can introduce moisture and that moisture must be managed in the finished formulation. Kaneka technical brochure Ask the supplier about storage, opening and compounding requirements on this basis. Confirm the actual process for the raw materials and formulation to be used.

2. Distinguish surface skin formation from curing within the material

As an example of document reading, Sika's data sheet for a silane-terminated-polymer finished sealant lists skin time and curing speed separately. It also explains that curing involves atmospheric moisture and that temperature and humidity affect application or curing behaviour. Sika product data sheet

When arranging sample work on this basis, record surface condition and observations of internal curing separately, together with temperature, humidity, sealant dimensions and observation time. Before scheduling tooling, handling or subsequent operations, agree how each stage will be assessed. Surface skin formation alone should not be taken to mean that the whole joint has reached the required condition for use.

This documentation illustrates a reading method; it does not provide a universal application time for other products.

3. Connect material properties with validation on the actual substrate

Strength, hardness and elongation in finished-sealant documentation can be items for reading and comparison, but the test method, specimen condition and conditioning should also be checked. For an actual project, separately list the substrate type, surface coating, cleaning and preparation, and service environment to create a relevant validation plan.

The Sika document above calls for adhesion and material compatibility to be verified on actual substrates under actual conditions, and for testing before painting. Sika application information Where painting is involved, include the paint name, painting stage and observations in the sample record. Limit conclusions to the combinations and conditions that have been validated.

4. Retain traceable information in comparison tables

For each key property, record six items: material name, sample or batch, document version, method, conditions and result. Mark missing information as awaiting confirmation, and distinguish reference data, test results and acceptance values agreed by both parties.

This approach helps purchasing, formulation and application teams discuss the same subject and clarify which questions the next round of sample work needs to answer.
